Why Facebook doesn't work for developing an online presense

Posted on May 31st, 2013

We all have it and it is a great product, if at times a bit of a procrastination tool.

The main reason for not using Facebook as a tool for breaking into tech, stems from the feed structure. If our goal is to be exposed to the most relevant content and thought leaders in an industry than FB just can't cut it. I want to read stories and get advice on business development strategy. But with FB I can't curate those stories as easily especially if I want to stay in touch with friends. The fact is FB at is core is a place to peek in on your friends and family's lives. As much as a love seeing my nieces and nephews grow up, looking at their pictures is not going to help me further my career. With twitter and LinkedIn I have complete control over the content I see.

While the argument could go that you can follow people and companies on FB, those stories are mixed in with pictures of my friends engagement party - essentially rendering FB inefficient for curating a news source.

This isn't to say we shouldn't use the different mediums to vocalize our opinions and drive traffic to the projects we are working on. As with any business the more we immerse ourselves in a new network and community, the more our network grows and the more we turn business acquaintance into friends.

Bottom line, don't expect your high school friend taking a year off to travel south east Asia to deliver you relevant content about the tech and startup ecosystem. But who know your post just might inspire your cousin to quite his job at Jefferies and start something revolutionary.

This is my first pistach.io post - I am really amazed at how easy it was to set up and integrate my other social media sites with. Job well done!
